Since the medicine from the nebulizer goes directly into the lungs, there is a chance that the lungs may become infected if the aerosol is contaminated. The risk of an infection can be minimized with following precautions.
/ Hands should be washed thoroughly before opening
the cup of the nebulizer.
/ Unit dose ampoules should be opened carefully and
the contents poured into a clean and fresh nebulizer
cup.
/ After each nebulization the nebulizer should be immediately disassembled and washed carefully.
/ The disassembled nebulizer cup and mask, or mouthpiece, should then be rinsed under a strong stream of warm water for thirty seconds. The excess moisture shaken off and the disassembled pieces dried on clean cloth or paper or towel.
/ The tubing should be connected and the compressor run for several seconds to dry small inside parts.
/ All the parts should then be properly stored in the space provided inside the nebulizer machine.
A combination of a nebulizer and MDIs can be used— a nebulizer before going to bed at night and MDIs, as required or prescribed, during the day. If the child feels better by using the nebulizer both in the morning and at night, then it can be done after consulting a specialist.
The most common reason for the failure of inhaled drugs in a child is inappropriate selection, or incorrect use of, an inhaler.
